Another day that promised better weather and after a drive of about an hour that took in the gorges of the Aude and a long stretch of Corbieres vineyards we reached our destination for the day – the twin castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse that look down over the Fenouilledes valley.
We laboured up and over the pass right next to Queribus and then continued on to Peyrepertuse, an almost impossibly sited castle on a ridge of white limestone rock. There is nothing in our modern existence to compare with the idea of building something like this. We explored the views and sites of the castle before an hour’s walk took us to lunch. One of our more interesting lunches due to wind, cow pats and eventually cows – one of which decided to charge our lunchers who were not expecting to be tested on their bullfighting skills. A quick look at the picture of John and Kate will show the attacker getting ready to pounce.
Our afternoon walk led us back to the valley with spectacular views all around. Then we drove on along the Mediterranean coast and back inland to Carcassonne.
