Our walk today is one of the most dramatic and enjoyable in the Duende repertoire. A repeat of yesterday’s exit from the hotel was followed by a long but gentle climb up onto the high flat lands which are cut through by deep and impressive gorges. The views throughout the morning were exceptional.
Before lunch we descended, at first gently, then more abruptly into the gorge. It seems impossible that the path can take us down to the bottom of such a precipitous place but we all made it without disaster, even if one or two palms were moistened by the effort. Then came the exciting part, fording and re-fording the stream at the bottom of the valley which was slightly, engorged, by recent rain. Yet again everyone made the crossing with no greater mishap than a minor stumble or wet boot.
The picnic was a marvel. Carried in by Liz and Alison, Ben’s helpers for the day, it was a fine repast and a lesson in logistical exactitude. As the rucksack was now lighter Ben carried out the empty plates and rubbish.
The afternoon was no less interesting than the morning – an excellent walk that took us high onto the shelves of rock that overhang the stunning gorges. There was no one about but us to witness a fine afternoon.
We returned to a magnificent dinner including local morrel mushrooms, porcini and roast lamb. A rich day in every way.
