We left in bright sunshine from the extraordinary town of Albarracín – a Moorish settlement that dates back well into the period of the Caliphate. There is a spectacular castrum on a plug of rock which is best seen from above; it is surrounded by a town has some remarkable houses of the same period.
We walked up from the town on a rocky path which brought us to a small ermita and from there w continued our walk across scrubby arid lands with a variety of rocks: limestone, granite sandstones and conglomerate rocks. We saw many fossils at one point.
The walk descended to our magnificent picnic in a small valley near Torres de Albarracín and from there we walked on, through the village and came along the valley side to Tramacastilla and our home for the next few days – El Batán. Run by the excellent Sebastián it is a superb restaurant and small hotel in the heart fo the Teruel countryside.
